OLYMPIA, Wash. – Washington is following California’s lead on transitioning to zero-emission truck fleets.

The Department of Ecology says the EPA has granted Washington and other states that follow California’s emissions rules to adopt a quota on zero-emission truck sales.

Beginning in 2025, an increasing percentage of manufacturer’s total sales in the state will have to be zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty trucks.

That percentage starts at 11% for medium duty and 7% for heavy duty trucks, then increases to 70% and 40% respectively by 2034.

Sellers of zero-emission trucks can earn credits that can be banked and traded, while sellers who don’t meet the requirements will face penalties.

Ecology says the move will help reduce the state’s greenhouse gas emissions, and also improve air quality in neighborhoods near ports and major roadways.
