UPDATE:The Bellingham School District says further tests show gummy candies confiscated at Kulshan Middle School on Thursday, April 20th, did not contain illicit drugs.
BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Gummy candies confiscated from a Kulshan Middle School student on Thursday, April 20th, were shown to be laced with fentanyl and GHB after police testing.
Bellingham Public Schools Superintendent Greg Baker released a statement on Friday, April 21st, concerning fentanyl awareness after the incident
School officials say the candies looked like chewing gum, they were small, square, green gummies lightly coated with a white powder and smelled of mint.
Baker detailed steps being taken to protect students including creating a lesson about the dangers of fentanyl to be shared across the school district, as well as the recent expanding of access to Narcan in middle schools.
