OLYMPIA, Wash. – Governor Jay Inslee has signed a bill aimed at “deepfakes” in political campaigns.
Media manipulated through artificial intelligence and other means is becoming increasingly common.
Solid majorities in the House and Senate passed the bill amid concerns that the technology will be used to mislead people.
Inslee says he expects it will be challenged in court.
“In the event that this is before our Supreme Court, it is my great hope that they understand this is an entirely new quantum leap in threats to democracy,” said Inslee. “Previously our Supreme Court has looked at issues of free speech, which I certainly understand, but this is a mortal threat to democracy itself.”
The bill requires large text to disclose the use of the technology in print or visual media.
The warning must appear during the entire duration of video media and at the beginning and end of audio-only media.
