BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A sprawling homeless encampment in north Bellingham was cleared this week.

Services were offered to campers but there did not appear to be any takers.

Bellingham Police Lt. Claudia Murphy says notices of the planned clearing were posted May 4th on the private property north of Home Depot and east of WinnCo Foods.

Representatives of the Lighthouse Mission, the Opportunity Council, Lummi Nation and Whatcom Health and Community Services visited people camping there over the weekend.

Officers contracted by the landowner ordered the last campers out Tuesday morning, May 9th, before heavy equipment moved in.

Murphy says none of the service providers reported anyone taking them up on offers of help.

The city had sued the landowner for allowing the encampment and the clean-up was part of a settlement reached in the lawsuit.
