BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The iconic Aloha Motel sign will be returning to Samish Way in Bellingham.

Brien Thane of the Bellingham & Whatcom County Housing Authority says it welcomed travelers for decades as they passed through Bellingham.

But by this century the Aloha Motel had become known more for drug use and crime.

The city condemned the property in 2014 and, along with the authority, has transformed it into an urban village of apartments, offices and shops.

The refurbished sign will be returned to the sight as a reminder of the spot’s positive history.

It will be installed this week and its signature neon light will be turned on at a later date.
