OLYMPIA, Wash. – Whatcom County is set to receive state funding after its selection as a rural health equity zone.
The state Department of Health made the announcement Wednesday as part of the Health Equity Zones initiative.
It aims to support communities where people face more limited access to health care and other needs.
Whatcom County was identified as the state’s rural Health Equity Zone based on their vast farmlands and active commercial fishing industry.
The County will receive $200,000 per year for at least two years to help identify health priorities and develop community action projects.
South King County was identified as the state’s urban zone.
A third zone for Native communities will be selected by tribal representatives this winter.
