SPOKANE, WA – The Department of Labor and Industries is fining Amazon for putting workers at another fulfillment center at risk of injury.

The department says workers at the center in Spokane are required to do repetitive work, lift heavy objects and other physical labor at such a fast pace that they’re at risk of developing skeletal muscular disorders.

It says the $85,800 fine is larger than previous penalties because the company has been cited before over conditions at other fulfillment centers in the state.

L&I says Amazon’s Spokane fulfillment center employs 2400 people and 400 of its workers have filed workers compensation claims in the past three years.

That’s the highest rate of any Amazon facility in Washington.

L&I maintains that the company has the means and the knowledge to invest in safer workplace practices.
