OLYMPIA, WA – Whatcom County and several of its cities will receive over $10 million in funding to combat the fentanyl epidemic.
The funds come as a result of Attorney General Bob Ferguson’s investigation into Walmart for its role in fueling the opioid epidemic as a pharmacy.
Walmart has since agreed to tightly monitor opioid prescriptions and will prevent patients from seeking multiple prescriptions.
The corporation will have to pay nearly $63 million to the state over the next three months.
Whatcom County will receive $5.8 million in funds and Bellingham will get $3.8 million as part of the resolution.
Lynden and Ferndale will also receive over $600,000 in funds between the two cities.
Each government’s spending needs to follow the state’s Opioid Response Plan.
That includes supporting people in treatment and recovery, making overdose treatment drugs more available and supporting first responders.
