BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A pair of public hearings are on the docket for the Whatcom County Council.
One ordinance up for discussion Tueday, June 23 involves a proposed moratorium on new civil detention facilities.
My Bellingham Now previously reported the ordinance was initially discussed during a late May council meeting. A substitute version of the bill passed 5-2 earlier this month.
If it passes a final vote, the ordinance would establish a temporary land use moratorium for detention facilities for up to a year. The moratorium would not apply to the new Whatcom County Jail.
A second public hearing will focus on proposed changes to the county’s fireworks laws.
In a draft ordinance, councilmembers are proposing limiting fireworks use to the evening hours of July 4, compared to current law that allows fireworks on July 3 and 5.
Both public hearings will be held Tuesday, June 23 in the Whatcom County Council Chambers.
