WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – More funding to support habitats for salmon and other fish is on its way to Whatcom County.

The Washington State Salmon Recovery Funding Board announced this week that it awarded over $50 million in grants for 145 projects across the state. The Lummi Nation received nearly $1 million for a pair of projects.

One local project will develop the preliminary design to improve habitat for Chinook salmon and steelhead trout in the lower Porter Reach area of the Middle Fork Nooksack River. The other project will restore over a mile of habitat to the Skookum Reach area of the South Fork Nooksack River.

Meanwhile, the Nooksack Indian Tribe received just under $245,000 to guide restoration efforts across the county in Water Resource Inventory Area 1, or WRIA 1.

The Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association was also awarded $500,000 to restore 1.6 miles of banks along the Nooksack River.

Nearly half of the $50 million in total grants was funded through the state’s Climate Commitment Act.
