CBP spokesperson Givens adds that the man is a documented Sureño gang member from Mexico, who has a prior immigration arrest from 2016.
Members of SWAT, Homeland Security, and the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office served a search warrant on a residence near Everson.
Sedro-Woolley Police say that an officer pulled over a van whose driver was suspected of having active arrest warrants Saturday evening.
The 40-year-old male driver and the 36-year-old female passenger both have active warrants out of California and remain in custody at the Whatcom County Jail.
His license expired as of August following his initial suspension.
The man was booked into jail on a federal warrant for assault of a federal officer, though it’s unclear what incident the charge relates to.
The former officer was fired from the university in 2024 after assaulting a suspect in handcuffs.
It comes as more than half of the fatal crashes in Washington between 2017 and 2021 involved impaired drivers.
The crash killed an 11-year-old and injured three others inside the car.
Anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or has any information is asked to contact the Bellingham Police Tipline at (360) 778-8611 or online
