BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A man is in custody after being accused of setting multiple trash bin fires in Bellingham.

Bellingham Police Department (BPD) spokesperson Megan Peters says they received the first call around 7:00 p.m. on Monday night for a fire at the Sunset Pond Apartments.

Three more fires were set near a Goodwill, Franklin St. and Grant St. with witnesses all providing a similar description of the suspect. A Bellingham Police officer saw a man on Alabama St. who matched the description given by eyewitnesses.

The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Cody Dykstra, led police on a short chase until a K9 caught him in pursuit. Dykstra was taken to the hospital as a precaution before being taken to the Whatcom County Jail where he remains without bail.

Peters says BPD is appreciative of all the citizens who called in to report the fires and help offer information on the suspect to prevent any further damage.
