WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Utility work is causing delays at a major intersection here in Whatcom County.

The county says the work at the E. Smith and Hannegan Road intersection is causing congestion during peak hours and drivers should plan for extra time or avoid that area if at all possible.

The work comes ahead of a major roundabout construction project scheduled to begin on May 28.

Construction will last until early July with a single-lane closure that will likely cause delays.

The intersection will then be closed for 25 straight days in early July through early August, with the specific closure dates being made available by the county soon.

A bid for the nearly $4 million project was recently awarded to Stremler Gravel.

The county says the project is funded by over $3.9 million in federal funds, including Surface Transportation Block Grant funds, Highway Safety Improvement Program funds, and Carbon Reduction Program funds.
