BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A man is in custody after leading police on a pursuit down I-5 in Bellingham.
Washington State Patrol Trooper Kelsey Harding says that a car initially fled from Whatcom County Sheriff’s deputies during an attempted traffic stop near McLeod Road Monday night, Oct. 19.
Bellingham Police say the driver, identified as 36-year-old Alecxis Cortez, had been driving into oncoming traffic, swerving erratically and driving through red lights before getting on I-5 southbound.
WSP troopers took over the pursuit after the driver got on I-5, where they were joined by a BPD vehicle with a grappler. BPD’s grappler stopped the car near Sunset Drive and Cortez was taken into custody.
Investigators learned that the car had been reported stolen from Marysville.
Cortez was arraigned on suspicion of DUI and several other charges, and remains at the Whatcom County Jail on over $100K bail.
