LYNDEN, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A major intersection north of Bellingham is reopening just in time for the Northwest Washington Fair.

Whatcom County Public Works (WCPW) has announced that the roundabout at Smith and Hannegan Road will reopen on the afternoon of Wednesday, August 7.

Crews fully closed the intersection in July for 30 days to finish the multi-lane project.

“Drivers should be aware that the intersection has significantly transformed from a signalized intersection to a multi-lane roundabout,” WCPW says. “Please slow down and use caution while traveling through the intersection for the first time.”

According to WCPW, the new roundabout is similar to the roundabouts on the Guide Meridian. Roundabouts were installed to increase the flow of traffic and provide curb-separated pedestrian and bicyclist facilities.

Crews will return in September to install lights and hydroseed the project site.

The reopening of the intersection happens to be 24 hours before the Lynden Fairgrounds open their gates for the Northwest Washington Fair.
