Prep Football News

The final week of the prep football regular season is underway in Whatcom County.

Lynden fell to Archbishop Murphy 35-14 last night in a showdown between two of the top teams in the state.

Squalicum also beat Bellingham 56-7 and Burlington-Edison beat Sehome 43-13 to wrap up the Class 2A regular season.

Lynden and Squalicum will join Burlington, Anacortes and Archbishop Murphy as the five Northwest Conference teams heading to the Round of 32 play-in next week.

Meanwhile, in Class 1A, Lynden Christian rallied to beat Blaine 42-28 and Mount Baker topped Meridian 35-20.

The Lyncs, Mountaineers and Trojans will all head to the Round of 24 play-in next week.

Coming up tonight, The Zone’s Friday Night Lights pregame show is live from Ferndale High School for the Golden Eagles’ win-or-go-home game against Oak Harbor. A win would send Ferndale to the Class 3A Round of 32 play-in next week, while a loss would end their season.

Allan Fee and the crew will preview that game and all the other ones going on around Whatcom County leading up to the 7:00 kickoff on KPUG.

Down south, Nooksack Valley is playing at Marysville-Pilchuck in a non-league game, also at 7.

Week 9 caps off tomorrow, when Lummi Nation travels to face Northwest Christian in another win-or-go-home game that could send the Blackhawks to the 1B district crossover next week. That game kicks off at 1:00 tomorrow afternoon from Tenino High School.

Prep Girls Soccer News

Other high school sports are also hitting the postseason.

Tonight is an off-night before the girls soccer district tournament continues tomorrow with a pair of semifinals showdowns.

In Class 2A, 2nd-seeded Sehome is hosting Anacortes at Civic Field at 1:00 before top-seeded Bellingham takes the turf at 3:00 to face Burlington-Edison.

Ferndale is also hosting Edmonds-Woodway at noon tomorrow in the 3A district quarterfinals.

Prep Volleyball News

Meanwhile, the prep volleyball district tournament gets underway tomorrow in Class 2A, when Sehome hosts Bellingham at 11 am, Squalicum hosts Anacortes at 1 pm and Lynden hosts the winner of Sultan and Burlington-Edison at 2.

The winners of those games will advance to the semifinals on Monday.

Seahawks News

The Seahawks could be getting reinforcements in their running back room.

The team designated Jadarian Price to return to practice yesterday after missing their past four games with a chest injury.  Head coach Mike Macdonald says it’s “realistic” the first-round rookie running back could play in Monday night’s game against the Bears.

Zach Charbonnet was also a full participant for the fourth straight practice yesterday, with the team hoping that he can make his season debut on Monday after tearing his ACL in January.

Seattle will look to reinvigorate a rushing attack that’s averaging the 9th-least yards per carry in the NFL.

Huskies/Cougs News

The Huskies are returning from their bye week for a big road matchup tomorrow night.

They’re facing Nebraska with a quarterback controversy on their hands. UW head coach Jedd Fisch still hasn’t named a starter after junior Elijah Brown led them to their first Big Ten win of the season against Purdue in the absence of Demond Williams Jr.

Tomorrow night’s game kicks off at 5:00.

Meanwhile, the Cougs are on the road against San Diego State at 4:00 tomorrow as they look to avoid their sixth-straight loss.

Kraken News

The surging Kraken are back tonight.

They’re on the road for a match against the Calgary Flames.

Seattle won three out of four games over their homestand this past week and currently sit three points out of first place in the Pacific Division. They’ll look to continue their dominance over the Flames this season, after notching a pair of 6-1 wins against Calgary earlier this month.

Coverage begins at 4:30 and puck drops at 5 on KGMI.

Mariners News

The Mariners are starting to form their coaching staff as they near the end of their manager search.

The Athletic reports that the club has hired CJ Gillman as their new hitting coach.

Gillman served as the team’s minor-league hitting coordinator for four seasons before spending this past season as the Washington Nationals’ director of hitting. He replaces Kevin Seitzer, who was fired along with several other members of the coaching staff at the end of the season.

The Athletic previously reported that the Mariners conducted their final round of interviews with former Astros manager Joe Espada and Cubs director of player development Jason Kanzler earlier this week.

According to the outlet, the team is expected to make a decision “shortly.”
