WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Traffic flagging and travel delays are not expected to slow down as cold winter days are quickly approaching.

Whatcom County Public Works has announced that their Small Area Paving Project will begin in the Ferndale and Lummi Nation areas.

The project is an annual effort to repair railroad crossings, bridge approaches and decks, as well as other paving areas experiencing pavement failure that is too large or complex for maintenance crews to fix in-house.

The locations are decided based on road conditions and available funding with the expertise of Maintenance & Operations road crew leaders and the county’s engineering department.

Whatcom County Public Works communication specialist Mandy Feutz says this year’s budget is approximately $600,000 for construction. The project contractor is Lakeside Industries, who were awarded the bid on Sept. 17.

The construction schedule will take place as follows:

  • Lummi Nation & Ferndale: Oct. 27 to Nov. 1
  • Lynden & Sumas: Nov. 4 to 8
  • Kickerville: Nov. 11 to 15
  • Acme & Slater Road Railroad: Nov. 18 to 22
  • Striping in all areas: Nov. 25 to 27

Road work is weather dependent and subject to change depending on conditions.
