WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Two Thanksgiving traditions in Whatcom County are looking to receive donations and support from community members.
Lighthouse Mission Ministries is partnering with community leaders, businesses, corporations and individuals to provide warm beds, support and meals to those who need it this Thanksgiving holiday.
The organization is seeking both volunteers and donations for its 101st Thanksgiving dinner later this month. Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, pie and all of the other holiday staples will be offered.
The dinner will be provided to anyone experiencing hunger or homelessness in Whatcom County. Last year, Lighthouse President Hans Erchinger-Davis said that over 600 meals were served.
Dozens of volunteers are being sought to serve the meals from 12 to 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day in Lighthouse’s new building on F Street.
The deadline to participate in Whatcom County’s 13th annual Turkey Drive is also steadily approaching.
This year, the Turkey Drive is being run by Brown & Brown Insurance Services in Lynden and the company is collecting cash and check donations to purchase turkeys and chickens for Whatcom County residents.
The fundraiser is being made in effort to help local families struggling with the higher costs of food and other necessities. Turkeys will be sent to families in need by the Whatcom County Food Bank Network and Project Hope Food Bank in Lynden.
Last year’s Turkey Drive donated over 3,700 pounds of turkey. As of Nov. 4, the “Turkey Tally” stood at $3,855 in donations.
“Layoffs, medical emergencies and more leave families needing extra help,” said Bobbi Green, a Brown & Brown employee. “These donations will provide healthy, protein-rich meals for many families in our local communities thanks to the generosity of so many individuals and businesses.”
Brown & Brown Insurance asks those interested to drop off or mail checks or cash to the office located on 501 Front St. in Lynden. Donors can also contribute to the fundraiser through the Turkey Drive GoFundMe. The cut off to participate in the food drive is Monday, Nov. 18.
