WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A local nonprofit is celebrating after receiving a state grant for more affordable housing projects.

Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom County has announced they’ve been chosen as one of the recipients of a $1 million CHIP grant. The grant offered through the Washington State Department of Commerce was sourced from the department’s Connecting Housing to Infrastructure Program, or CHIP.

The nonprofit will use the funding to connect their Mateo Meadows Community in Everson to local sewer, water and storm systems. Once completed, the community will feature 30 townhomes, 14 apartments and 7,000 feet of commercial space within walking distance of E. Main Street.

Construction began in fall 2024 and work to connect utilities to the city’s supply is already underway.
