As spring temperatures climb in Whatcom County, Feller Heating reminds homeowners to change their HVAC filters to maintain efficiency and improve indoor air quality.

But aside from making sure you install a new air filter, it is also important to do a quick check to see if the previous air filter was installed correctly.

Phillip Dye, Residential Estimator/Project Manager for Feller Heating and Air Conditioning in Bellingham, has seen all sorts of mishaps with HVAC systems while out on the job.

“The biggest thing we see is more than one filter. If people have more than one filter installed, it’s a lot of air restriction on the unit,” Dye said. “It can pretty much shorten the lifespan of your equipment.”

Dye explained that during warmer months, HVAC systems run more frequently, making clean filters essential. A dirty filter restricts airflow, forcing the system to work overtime and potentially shortening its lifespan.

Replacing an old filter with a new, clean one can lower an HVAC system’s energy consumption substantially. On top of that, routine filter changes can help reduce allergens in the home – an important consideration for residents with seasonal allergies.

Dye recommends checking filters monthly and replacing them every one to three months, depending on the type of filter and household conditions. Homes with pets or residents with allergies may require more frequent changes.

“For one-inch filters, you want to change those out every month or two. Four-inch filters can be replaced every four to six months,” Dye said.

Homeowners are also encouraged to schedule seasonal HVAC tune-ups to ensure their systems are running efficiently.

For Whatcom County residents, routine maintenance like regular filter changes can help keep energy costs down and homes comfortable throughout the spring and summer months.
