BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Bellingham Public Schools (BPS) is asking the community for help as it grapples with proposed cuts to federal funding.

The district announced that it’s expecting to run a pair of levies on the upcoming November general election ballot.

One is a supplemental operations levy, which the district says would raise about $4 million per year to help stabilize its budget. The other measure is a facilities maintenance levy aimed at making essential repairs to school buildings.

The six-year levy would provide roughly $11 million per year for projects like roof replacements, HVAC system upgrades and new window installations.

The announcement comes as the district is facing a potentially severe loss of funding.

BPS estimates it could lose $750,000 in annual funds due to education cuts in the proposed federal budget.

My Bellingham Now previously reported that the district already plans to eliminate 25 full-time positions in light of a projected $15 million budget shortfall.
