BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Biking to make your next flight or train ride in Bellingham just got more secure.
The Port of Bellingham and Whatcom Transportation Authority have installed new bike lockers at the Bellingham International Airport and Fairhaven Transit Station.
The fully enclosed, weather-protected lockers can be rented through a mobile app called Movatic. They cost five cents per hour for the first ten days, then 12 cents per hour for the next four days.
If a bike is left there for more than two weeks, it will be considered abandoned and removed.
“Adding bike lockers to the airport and Fairhaven Station is an important step in making Bellingham a more connected, climate-friendly, and equitable city,” said Michael Shepard, Port of Bellingham Commissioner. “These investments by the Port of Bellingham and Whatcom Transit Authority make it easier for residents and visitors to choose active transportation while supporting jobs, travel, and recreation throughout the county.”
The lockers will have additional space in each compartment for travel items.
It comes after the City of Bellingham installed two sets of bike lockers downtown using the same mobile app in response to an increase in bike thefts.
“After years of advocacy, we’re excited to see secure bike storage expanding to more local transportation hubs,” said Laura Weiss, a Walk & Roll Bellingham board member. “Whether someone’s commuting to work or catching a flight, having a safe place to store their bike is essential for supporting our regional transportation and climate goals. And, it means a more vibrant, equitable city.”
