OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The first legal challenge has been made against the state’s so-called “millionaires’ tax.”

Let’s Go Washington announced on Thursday that it’s suing Secretary of State Steve Hobbs over his decision to block a public vote on the new state law.

The political action committee claims Hobbs misquoted the Constitution in denying its request for voters to weigh in.

Much of the argument centers around an emergency clause in the bill’s language that blocks any potential referendum on it.

LGW argues the clause is invalid and plans to bring the issue to the state Supreme Court to clarify the limits of the clause in hopes of allowing a public vote.

Gov. Bob Ferguson signed the income tax into law earlier this week.

It seeks to institute a 9.9% tax on households whose income is more than $1 million a year.

The tax would start to be collected in 2029 and would be expected to impact around 20,000 households.
