BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Thousands of dollars in prizes are up for grabs as the spring fishing season ramps up this weekend.
The Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife says Saturday, April 25, is the opening day for fishing at lowland lakes.
The department has stocked nearly 15.5 million trout and kokanee in more than 500 lowland lakes and ponds across the state.
The 11th annual Trout Derby is also kicking off on Saturday.
Anglers who catch trout with a green tag near the dorsal fin will win a prize donated from a local business such as Mariners tickets, fishing gear, gift cards and much more.
Lake Padden is the only derby location in Whatcom County, while Skagit County has Lake Erie, Lake McMurray and Sixteen Lake.
Fish and Wildlife is reminding the public that everyone 16 and older needs a fishing license.
