BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A prominent Lynden-based coffee chain is closing one of its central locations.

Woods Coffee spokesperson Ryan Spiker confirmed to My Bellingham Now that the business is closing its Railroad Avenue shop in downtown Bellingham at the end of May.

Spiker said the consistent drop in foot traffic in the area paired with rising operating costs made it unsustainable to keep the location open.

There are currently no plans to relocate the shop to another downtown space.

It comes amid a broad trend that reaches beyond downtown Bellingham of people turning to online shopping and less workers coming to the office, which has reduced daytime foot traffic. The Bellingham City Council recently heard a presentation on rising commercial vacancies downtown as the city works to address it.

The upcoming closure will leave Woods with 23 locations across Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish and King counties.
