BIRCH BAY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – No one was hurt after a tribal canoe capsized near Birch Bay.

Whatcom Fire District 7 Chief Ben Boyko told My Bellingham Now that the canoe began taking on water near Point Whitehorn around 9 a.m.

Before responders arrived, Chief Boyko said a private vessel was able to help 14 swimmers get from the canoe to shore.

All of them were evaluated by rescue crews and released at the scene.

Chief Boyko said that it’s unclear what caused the boat to go under at this time.
