Mariners News
The Mariners have the day off today after finishing a divisional showdown with a pair of crucial wins.
The M’s fell to the Astros on a walk-off homer in the 10th inning of Friday’s series opener in Houston, but proceeded to win each of the next two games.
Cal Raleigh hit what ended up being the winning home run to give Seattle a 3-2 victory in last night’s rubber match. Bryan Woo only gave up two runs through six innings to earn his first road win in over three months.
The Mariners now sit four games behind the Astros in the race for the AL West and own the head-to-head tiebreaker after winning nine of their 11 games so far this season.
They’ll wrap up their road trip with three games in Milwaukee against the Brewers, who own the best record in Major League Baseball. Coverage for the series opener starts at 3:30 tomorrow and first pitch is at 4:40 on KPUG with Bryce Miller on the mound.
MLB News
There was plenty more big news around the MLB over the weekend.
Cardinals rookie outfielder Joshua Baez made history on Saturday by becoming the first player to hit a home run in each of his first three at-bats in the majors.
The baseball world mourned the loss of former major league pitcher Tommy John, a four-time All-Star who was the namesake behind the pioneering elbow surgery that extended his career by 14 years.
Team owners also approved the sale of the San Diego Padres today at an MLB-record valuation of $3.9 billion.
Seahawks News
The Seahawks came up short in their preseason opener.
They fell to the Dallas Cowboys 17-7 at Lumen Field on Saturday. They started strong with a 13-play, 80-yard scoring drive on their opening possession, but failed to get on the board from there.
Rookie receiver Montorie Foster Jr. highlighted the game with a 5-yard touchdown catch from Drew Lock.
Seattle’s next preseason game takes place against the Titans on Sunday in Tennessee.
But perhaps the team’s biggest move over the weekend was locking up star cornerback Devon Witherspoon to a record extension. ESPN reports that the four-year deal is worth $132 million with more than $101 million guaranteed, making Witherspoon the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.
His contract now runs through the 2031 season.
UW Huskies News
The Huskies made the cut in the first AP college football rankings of the year.
Washington came in at No. 17 as one of eight Big Ten teams to make the preseason poll
Ohio State and Oregon were ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively. The defending national champion Indiana Hoosiers got No. 6.
USC and Michigan were just ahead of UW, at No. 14 and 16, respectively. Iowa came in at No. 22.
The Huskies face five of those ranked teams during their conference schedule. They open their season at home on Sunday, Sept. 6, against Washington State in the Apple Cup.
Storm News
It was another rough weekend for the struggling Storm.
Seattle rallied from double-digit deficits in each of their games against the Portland Fire and Chicago Sky, but ended up losing both games by just two points.
Last night’s loss to Chicago snapped the Sky’s six-game skid.
The Storm have the week off before traveling to Dallas to face the Wings on Sunday.
Sounders/Reign News
The Sounders’ recent woes also continued yesterday down at Lumen Field.
They fell to the Vancouver Whitecaps 2-0 for a club-record seventh straight defeat in MLS play.
The Sounders haven’t won since beating the San Jose Earthquakes in mid-May. They’ve plummeted to 11th place in the Western Conference standings with less than three months left in the regular season.
They’ll look to rebound at home on Wednesday against Austin FC.
Meanwhile, the Reign topped the Chicago Stars 1-0 on Friday night to push their unbeaten streak to four. Next up, the Reign play at Racing Louisville on Wednesday.
NCAA Basketball News
A Washington coaching great has been enshrined in basketball history.
