BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Fire destroyed a homeless encampment but did little other damage in Bellingham Saturday morning, March 25th.

Bellingham Fire says crews responded just after 9 a.m. to reports of the fire in thick brush in a greenway north of Sunset Drive and west of Hannegan Road.

The fire produced plumes of dark, acrid smoke and caused numerous explosions, likely by igniting propane tanks.

Fire crews held back because the area was difficult to access and the fire was not spreading to vegetation.

Bellingham Police officers contacted some people around the encampment and say no one was injured.
