OLYMPIA, Wash. – Ahead of a Texas court ruling, Governor Jay Inslee is taking measures to ensure people in Washington state have access to abortion medication.
The Governor announced that he authorized the state Department of Corrections to purchase 30,000 doses, a three-year supply of mifepristone.
“Washington state will not allow a judge in Texas to deny the right of Washington women to this safe drug,” said Inslee. “We will not sit idly by. We have to recognize these threats will continue and our actions will continue to preserve the right of choice in the state of Washington.”
The University of Washington also purchased and contributed 10,000 doses to the state’s supply.
A lawsuit brought before a judge in Texas challenges the FDA’s approval of the drug and could end nationwide access to the medication.
