MOUNT BAKER, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – State crews are digging out the final stretch of the Mount Baker Highway.
WSDOT has begun clearing the last few miles to Artist Point, where up to 20 feet of snow still covers the road and parking lot.
The narrow, steep section closes every fall for safety. Crews plow as far as Heather Meadows in winter, but the final push happens each spring.
Last year, crews began work to clear that stretch of the highway on June 2, and WSDOT said the road reopened on June 27 in 2025.
Once it opens, more than 650 vehicles a day head to Artist Point, and tens of thousands stop nearby for permits before outdoor trips.
