LYNDEN, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The Lynden School District may have avoided a looming teacher strike next week.
The Lynden Education Association (LEA) announced on Wednesday night, Oct. 21, that they’ve reached a tentative agreement on a new contract with the district.
Superintendent David Vanderyacht confirmed the news and says some details, including length of contract and salary terms, may be released if the LEA votes to approve it this week.
No details of the contact have currently been disclosed.
The announcement comes after educators with LEA voted to authorize a strike starting on Wednesday, Oct. 28, if they could not come to terms on a new contract.
The district says it’s making an effort to be “fiscally conservative” amid declining enrollment, rising insurance and a lack of special education funding from the state. It had previously proposed gradual salary increases over the next three years that exceed the state’s annual inflation adjustments by between 0.4% and 1%.
If teachers vote to ratify the agreement this week, the Lynden School District Board of Directors would likely hold a final vote at their meeting on Thursday, Nov. 12.
