Mariners News

The Mariners are currently battling the Marlins in the second of their three-game series.

The M’s lost the opener in heartbreaking fashion last night, as Miami walked it off in the 10th inning to win 6-5. Cal Raleigh doubled twice, including a run-scoring two-bagger during the Mariners’ three-run eighth inning.

Cole Young added his 10th home run of the season, but it wasn’t enough as the Marlins won their fourth straight.

George Kirby got the start today as the M’s look to even the series up. First pitch is at 3:40 on KPUG.

MLB News

One of baseball’s all-time greats is winding down his career.

3x Cy Young award winner Justin Verlander announced today that he plans to retire at the end of the season.

Verlander has played 21 seasons in the big leagues, starting with 13 years in Detroit, where he became one of the few pitchers to win MVP along with his first Cy Young award. He went on to spend six seasons in Houston, where he won a pair of World Series and two more Cy Youngs.

Verlander ranks 8th all-time in strikeouts and sits just 20 back from overtaking Don Sutton in 7th place.

The 43-year-old will make his 10th All-Star Game appearance next week after being named a Legend Pick by MLB commissioner Rob Manfred.

This season’s All-Star Game takes place next Wednesday in Victoria, BC.

The Bells continue their homestand tonight when they host the Everett Merchants. They’re in the midst of a three-game stretch against non-league opponents that began yesterday with a 5-1 win over the Northwest Star Nighthawks.

First pitch for tonight’s game against Everett is at 6:35 from Joe Martin Field.
