Mariners News
The Mariners will be missing one of their top hitters for at least the next week.
The team placed third baseman Brendan Donovan on the 10-day injured list today with a left groin strain.
Donovan left Friday’s loss to Texas with what the team called a hip issue. He also missed a few games earlier this month with a groin issue after landing awkwardly on the first base bag in Anaheim.
Taking his spot on the roster will be infielder Will Wilson, who was called up from Triple-A Tacoma.
The 29-year-old Donovan has been one of the Mariners’ best hitters this season in the leadoff position, batting .304 and leading the team in on-base percentage. JP Crawford is taking his leadoff spot in the lineup today.
The M’s are looking to maintain momentum from a successful series against their division rivals over the weekend.
They’re hosting the Athletics in the first of a three-game series.
The Mariners are coming off back-to-back wins over the Texas Rangers that snapped their four-game skid. Their revived offense combined to score 12 runs between Saturday and Sunday’s games after coming up scoreless in the series opener on Friday.
Bryan Woo led the way in yesterday’s win, throwing seven strong innings of two-run ball to hold the Rangers off as the M’s improved to 10-13 on the young season.
Emerson Hancock is on the mound tonight as they look to win their third straight. Coverage begins at 5:30 and first pitch is at 6:40 on KPUG.
Sounders News
The Sounders impressed in their return to MLS play over the weekend.
They beat St. Louis City 4-1 on Saturday behind a pair of goals from Cristian Roldan. After the second score, Roldan grabbed the ball, tucked it under his jersey and sucked his thumb to announce he’s expecting his second child.
Albert Rusnak assisted on both goals.
The Sounders improved to 5-1-1 on the season and are unbeaten in their last five MLS matches. Next up, they’ll continue their homestand against FC Dallas on Saturday.
NFL News
One of the Seahawks’ division rivals just settled one of their biggest offseason questions.
The San Francisco 49ers signed star left tackle Trent Williams to a two-year, $50 million contract extension that runs through 2027. The announcement follows several months of negotiations, with even some speculation that the team could move on from the 37-year-old Williams.
He’s spent six of his 15-year career with the Niners, earning 12 Pro Bowl nods and three 1st Team All-Pro selections.
WWU Vikings News
Western’s softball team had another successful showing over the weekend.
The Vikings took three out of four games against Simon Fraser in Burnaby, BC on Friday and Saturday. They won the first three before falling in the fourth by a single run.
Sophomore catcher EmmaJoy Wise hit leadoff home runs in each of Saturday’s doubleheader games and finished the day going 4-5 at the plate.
The Viks are still sitting two games behind Saint Martin’s for first place in the GNAC standings with just eight games to go in the season.
They’ll have a chance to move into first place this weekend when they host Saint Martin’s for a pair of doubleheaders in their final homestand of the regular season.
