A former Seahawks star is calling it a career, at least on the field.

Russell Wilson announced today on social media that he’s retiring from the NFL after 14 seasons.

Wilson spent 10 seasons as starting quarterback in Seattle, where he won a Super Bowl in 2024 and made nine Pro Bowls while playing in all but two games. He retires as the Seahawks’ all-time leader in passing yards, passing touchdowns and completions.

The team traded Wilson to Denver in a blockbuster deal in 2022, leaving the Seahawks with a group of future draft picks that went on to become Devon Witherspoon, Charles Cross, Boye Mafe and the recently-extended Derick Hall.

Russ went on to play two seasons for the Broncos before spending a year each with the Steelers and the Giants. He confirmed that he’s now joining “The NFL Today” on CBS as an analyst.

 

The Seahawks’ preseason schedule got released today.

The Hawks will play their first game against the Dallas Cowboys at Lumen Field on Saturday, Aug. 15. They’ll also play at Tennessee the next weekend before wrapping the preseason up on the road against Kansas City.

The Hawks open the NFL regular season at home on Wednesday, Sept. 9, against the New England Patriots in a rematch of last season’s Super Bowl.

Mariners News

The Mariners had their longest win streak of the season come to an end this afternoon.

The M’s fell to the New York Mets 7-1 at T-Mobile Park to snap their eight-game streak. The Mets used a four-run fourth inning to power the win, while Freddy Peralta gave up one run through six innings and their bullpen followed with three innings of no-hit ball.

J.P. Crawford delivered the Mariners’ only run of the game with a solo shot in the first inning. The veteran shortstop finished with three of the team’s six hits.

Meanwhile, George Kirby got lit up for four earned runs as he suffered the third loss in his last four starts.

On the bright side, Josh Naylor was back in the lineup after missing yesterday’s game due to back spasms. The M’s still own a two game lead over the Rangers for first place in the AL West. 

They have the day off tomorrow before going off on an extended 10-game road trip out East. It starts in Detroit on Friday with a weekend series against the Tigers. 

 

Meanwhile, one of the Mariners’ sidelined stars is beginning his road back to the team.

Mariners insider Shannon Drayer reports that Cal Raleigh will begin a rehab assignment with the Everett AquaSox on Sunday. The plan is for Raleigh to join the Tacoma Rainiers next Tuesday and play there the rest of the week before the Mariners decide his next steps.

Raleigh, last year’s American League MVP runner-up, has been out since May 14 with a right oblique strain.

The Bells are aiming to even up their series against the AppleSox in Game 2 tonight.

The Bells had their home opener spoiled last night in a 3-2 loss to Wenatchee.

They started strong when returning first baseman Noah Cassie opened with an RBI single in the first inning to give the Bells an early lead. But the AppleSox loaded the bases in the sixth inning and scored all three runs on a single, walk and sacrifice fly.

Bellingham nearly rallied in the ninth when Matt Churchill scored Bryce Johnson on a two-out single to come within one run, but they couldn’t force extras.

They’ll look to avoid losing their third straight tonight with fireworks set for after the game. First pitch is at 6:35 from Joe Martin Field.

NBA/NHL Finals News

The NBA Finals are tipping off tonight.

The San Antonio Spurs are hosting the New York Knicks in Game 1. It’s a rematch of the 1999 Finals, where the Spurs won in five games.

The Knicks will look to win their first title in over five decades, while the Spurs are eyeing a title to kick off their potential dynasty behind superstar Victor Wembanyama. Spurs coach Mitch Johnson has plenty of ties to the Pacific Northwest, as the son of SuperSonics NBA champ John Johnson and a graduate of O’Dea High School.

Meanwhile, the Golden Knights got a leg up in the Stanley Cup Finals last night. Vegas edged the Carolina Hurricanes 5-4 in Game 1 thanks to a late goal by Tomas Hertl.

The Hurricanes will look to even the series at home tomorrow night.
