OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The state’s latest lawsuit against the Trump administration takes aim at federal disaster funding.
Washington State Attorney General Nick Brown joined 24 other states in suing the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and FEMA Thursday, July 23.
The coalition claims new conditions for billions of dollars in grant funding require states to change their election rules to align with the administration and help DHS with immigration enforcement.
They also allow DHS to end grant funding at any time for any reason.
The funds are meant to help states prepare for and respond to emergencies and natural disasters, including acts of terrorism and cyberattacks.
According to the AG’s office, Washington receives about $20 million from one of those major grant programs each year.
