OLYMPIA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – Washington state lawmakers are contemplating harsher punishments for drivers who attempt to flee from police.

An initial public hearing was held on Monday, Feb. 17 for SB 5333.

If signed into law, police can impound a car that was used to elude law enforcement for up to 72 hours unless another legal owner of the vehicle claims it. Suspects charged but awaiting trial may be required to wear an ankle monitor.

Those convicted of eluding police could have their vehicle permanently seized and would be required to serve time in community custody.

The bill is being praised by law enforcement agencies around the state, but some prosecutors argue that the process of getting the vehicle out of the pound may be too complex.

It’s scheduled to be discussed by the Senate’s Committee on Law and Justice Thursday, Feb. 20.
