Mariners News

The Mariners are back at T-Mobile Park tonight for the start of a challenging homestand.

They’re hosting the Chicago Cubs in the first of a three-game series.

The M’s are coming off a road trip where they won a critical series against the Astros, but lost series to both the Yankees and Brewers. Seattle ended the road trip with four wins and five losses, while suffering their worst defeat in franchise history in Milwaukee on Tuesday.

Time’s ticking to make a final run at the playoffs, with just 34 games left in the season and four games separating them and the first-place Astros. But Mariners fans got massive news yesterday, with multiple outlets reporting that the team plans to call up top prospect Kade Anderson to take the mound against the Cubs tomorrow.

It won’t be an easy major-league debut, as the Cubs’ electric offense boasts the second-most runs scored in baseball, led by National League MVP contender Pete Crow-Armstrong.

First up, Emerson Hancock is on the mound for tonight’s series opener against the Cubs. Coverage begins at 6:00 and first pitch is at 7:10 on KPUG.

Seahawks News

The Seahawks are back on the field this weekend.

They’re playing their second game of the preseason against the Titans in Tennessee on Sunday. The defending Super Bowl champs have a lot to improve on after falling to the Cowboys 17-7 in their preseason opener last weekend.

Coverage begins at 3:00 on Sunday and kickoff is at 5 on KGMI.

Meanwhile, the team announced that wide receiver Jake Bobo went down in their joint practice with the Titans today with what appears to be a serious knee injury. There’s no projected timeline for his return, but coach Mike Macdonald says early returns are that it looks to be a “long-term injury.”

The 28-year-old was projected to be the team’s No. 5 receiver after receiving a two-year, $5.5 million extension in March.

In other NFL news, the Huskies’ all-time leading rusher Myles Gaskin announced he’s retiring after seven seasons in the league. The O’Dea alum racked up over 5,300 rushing yards in four years with UW before being drafted by the Dolphins in 2019.

The 29-year-old went on to spend his final season with the Seahawks last year.

Sports Media News

One of the Seattle Times’ top sports columnists is leaving the paper after more than a decade.

Matt Calkins announced yesterday that he’s decided to resign.

He says the breaking point was the paper’s refusal to run with a column he wrote from the perspective of two female student athletes he met during a Storm-Fever game who were opposed to competing against biological males.

Calkins says it was one of several pieces he wrote that had been spiked and felt like he could no longer properly do his job as a columnist.

NBA News

A former Cougs basketball star has found his next NBA team.

ESPN reports that Klay Thompson is expected to sign with the Miami Heat after clearing waivers following his contract buyout from the Dallas Mavericks.

Thompson’s buyout was reportedly spurred by him telling the Mavericks that he wanted to play for a contender.

The 4x NBA champ with Golden State averaged 13 points per game throughout two seasons in Dallas, which went 26-56 last year. He now joins a Heat team that just added former MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo from Milwaukee in a blockbuster trade earlier this year.

Thompson, who was a standout guard at Washington State, ranks fourth in the NBA with nearly 3,000 career 3-pointers.
