TACOMA, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A person being held at the ICE Detention facility in Tacoma has escaped.
KOMO reports that police were alerted around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 27 that someone had left the building.
Tacoma police officers on patrol in the area did an initial search but were unable to locate them.
The escape comes days after ICE officials arrested a farmworker activist in Skagit County. According to their records, 25-year-old Alfredo “Lelo” Juarez is being held at their Tacoma facility.
Hundreds of union members and other protesters gathered at that very facility on Thursday night.
The Seattle Times reports the rally was held to demand the release of Juarez Zeferino and 64-year-old Lewelyn Dixon, a union member who works as a lab technician at UW Medicine.
Dixon’s family says she was detained at Seattle-Tacoma Airport on Feb. 28 after returning from a trip to the Philippines. They believe she’s being held because of an embezzlement conviction in 2001, though they say she already served her sentence and has a green card.
U.S. Senator Patty Murray said in a statement that she is “closely tracking” the arrests of both Juarez and Dixon.
Gov. Bob Ferguson also told the Times that he’s concerned about the reports he’s hearing and is working to get more information.
