BELLINGHAM, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – An outpouring of public feedback has led to some upcoming changes in some of Bellingham’s sanitation services.

Earlier this year, the City of Bellingham began rolling out new food waste bins for single-family households in order to comply with future state requirements. These new food waste bins can hold up to 60 gallons of organic waste and are picked up once every other week.

Bellingham Public Works says that they’ve decided to make changes to the new bin program as a result of community concerns. One of the biggest issues that came to their attention was space constraints in regard to the bins’ size.

Public Works says they’re working with Sanitary Services Company (SSC) to order smaller bins, which will be available upon request. Monthly cost reductions are also being expanded to more customers.

SSC will also offer free indoor compost caddies to reduce the number of trips people make to their outdoor bins.
