Mariners News
The Mariners are still searching for their first road win of the season in Game Two against Cincinnati tonight. The M’s couldn’t hold on to an early lead against the Reds yesterday and lost the series opener 8-4. Dylan Moore hit two home runs and drove in all four of Seattle’s runs, but Cincy used a 4-run fifth inning to take the comeback win.
New third baseman Ben Williamson hit a single in his first at-bat as a Mariner and went on to score a run after being called up from Triple-A Tacoma just days ago. Luis Castillo struggled in his return to Cincinnati, giving up six runs across four and one-thirds innings. The Mariners are 0-4 in road games this season entering today’s match against the Reds with Bryce Miller on the mound. Coverage begins at 2:30 and first pitch is at 3:40 on KPUG.
The Mariners sent down a struggling reliever just before their game today. The team announced that it optioned right-hander Gregory Santos to Triple-A Tacoma while calling up right-hander Will Klein. Santos’ demotion comes after he gave up two runs over one-third of an inning in yesterday’s loss to the Reds. He had also allowed at least one run in each of his three previous outings. Klein will replace him in the bullpen after being acquired from the Athletics in January.
Kraken News
The Kraken nearly pulled off an incredible late-game rally, but had their home finale spoiled last night. Seattle fell to the LA Kings 6-5 in their last game of the season. The playoff-bound Kings scored the first two goals of the game and never trailed to secure their fourth straight win. Seattle trailed by four early in the third period, but didn’t go out without a fight as they strung together three unanswered goals to pull within one.
The Kraken end the season with a 35-41-6 record, tied for third-worst in the NHL. They finished with one more win than last year, but five less points because they had more losses in regulation than in overtime. Jared McCann led the team in points after netting 22 goals and 39 assists.
Prep Sports News
A top prospect in the MLB Draft continued his dominant season against Lynden yesterday. Mount Vernon senior shortstop Xavier Neyens hit three home runs against the Lions on the way to a 17-1 win. Neyens is currently listed by MLB.com as the 8th-ranked prospect in the Class of 2025.
The 6-foot-4 lefty has helped Mount Vernon to a 10-3 record and a 5th-place ranking among 3A schools in the state. Neyens is already committed to Oregon State University. But if he’s taken in this summer’s MLB draft, he could become just the tenth high school hitter out of Washington to be picked in the first round.
