Mariners News
The Mariners are licking their wounds after getting swept in Arlington.
They fell to the Texas Rangers 3-0 this afternoon to suffer their fifth straight loss.
Bryan Woo started strong by delivering four innings of shutout ball, but Texas loaded the bases in the fifth. Rangers outfielder Brandon Nimmo chopped a grounder to first and two runners scored after newly-called up first baseman Connor Joe delivered an errant throw to Mitch Garver at home plate.
Texas extended their lead two batters later with a sacrifice fly for their third and final run of the game.
Rob Refsnyder had the Mariners’ sole highlight of the game in the third inning with a spectacular home run robbery in right field. But their offense never got going, managing just two hits and striking out 13 times.
The Rangers now own first place in the American League West at 7-5, while the struggling Mariners sit at the bottom of the division at 4-9. They have the day off tomorrow before returning home for a four game series against the Astros.
Meanwhile, one of the Mariners’ lineup regulars is hitting the injured list.
The team placed outfielder Victor Robles on the 10-day IL this morning with a right pec strain. The Seattle Times reports that Robles suffered the injury during a pregame workout yesterday.
The Mariners also transferred reliever Carlos Vargas from the 15-day IL to the 60-day IL.
With the open roster spot left by Robles, the team called up 33-year-old Connor Joe from Triple-A Tacoma for today’s game to give Josh Naylor the day off.
Kraken/Torrent News
The Kraken’s late-season freefall continued last night as their playoff hopes took yet another blow.
Seattle fell to the Minnesota Wild 5-2 for their sixth straight loss.
Brandon Montour and Adam Larsson each scored goals in the first period to give the Kraken an early lead. But the playoff-bound Wild responded with four unanswered goals to earn their fourth straight win.
The struggling Kraken have now lost 10 of their last 11 games. They’re on the brink of playoff elimination, sitting nine points behind the Nashville Predators for the final wild card spot in the Western Conference with five games remaining.
They’ll look to break their skid tomorrow night when they begin their final homestand of the season against the Vegas Golden Knights. Coverage begins at 6:30 and puck drops at 7 on KPUG.
Meanwhile, the Torrent fell to the Montreal Victoire 4-1 last night.
Seattle is moving closer to becoming the first team in the league to be eliminated from postseason contention. The Torrent need to beat Ottawa on the road tonight to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Sounders News
The Sounders are in Mexico tonight as they continue their crossover tournament with Liga MX.
They’re facing Tigres UANL in the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup. The quarterfinals is a two-legged series, so the clubs will face off again at Lumen Field next week and the winner of the aggregate score will advance.
The Sounders are one of only three MLS teams that have won the international competition, having done so in 2022. They’re rolling right now, riding a six-game unbeaten streak that includes five shutouts.
Their match against Tigres starts at 6:00.
Seahawks News
The Seahawks’ starting quarterback just got his second ring of the year.
The team announced that Sam Darnold married his wife Katie Hoofnagle in Santa Fe last Friday. The guest-list included teammate Cooper Kupp, Seattle-area comedian Adam Ray, All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey and former MVP Josh Allen and his wife Hailee Steinfeld.
Darnold helped lead the Seahawks to a Super Bowl earlier this year in his first season with the team.
