BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A group tasked with evaluating the needs for a new jail in Whatcom County has identified three possible locations for the facility.
The Stakeholder Advisory Committee, which is made up of community members and local leaders, presented their findings to the Whatcom County Council on Tuesday, February 7th.
They highlighted three potential sites for a new jail, all of which are properties owned by the county.
The site on LaBounty Drive in Ferndale has been previously debated as a jail site, but voters rejected ballot funding measures for a jail on that property in 2015 and 2017.
The parking lot next to the current jail is also being considered, as is another property in the Irongate area.
Details on how the jail would be funded were not listed in the report.
