WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The temperature is dropping and it’ll only continue to fall as we reach the tail-end of autumn in the pacific northwest. In some years past, we’ve seen snow storms in the lowlands of Whatcom and Skagit counties in November. That means freezing temps are possible as the calendar year ends.
Making sure your home is up to scratch for potential freezes is as much about comfort as it is about financial protection. If your home can’t keep heat because the seals are bad on the home, you may be losing money by spending it on heat that drifts through the crack under the door.
If you can’t heat the whole home without your gas or electric bill going through the roof, it may be worth evaluating what your home is doing for you. Pipes can freeze in walls if not properly heated, either through water running inside or properly heated from the outside elements. The bitter cold can make pipes brittle and at risk of cracking when temperatures shift.
A lot of old homeowners in our region will recommend to guests and tenants to keep a tap dripping in winter to protect the pipes from breakage. That doesn’t need to be your reality if your home is properly insulated. home is properly heated & insulated. Phillip Dye, the Residential Estimator & Project Manager at Feller Heating says this:
“Whether it is the entire home or smaller sections of the home, we can come out and do an evaluation that includes a heat load calculation, figure out how much heat that space needs based on building construction, materials, insulation values, windows/doors, etc. That way we can come up with a better solution to heat the space and eliminate the stress of freezing water lines!”
Talk to your local heating experts when you’re budgeting this holiday season and make sure you’re set up for a warmer inside environment as the days get shorter and the nights get longer this November.
