SUMAS, WA. – (KGMI.com) A Romanian man is facing over a dozen federal charges following a serious crash near the border earlier this year.
Acting U.S. Attorney Tessa Gorman said that 48-year-old Ionel Niculae, also known as Adrian Dumitrescu, drove into Canada illegally three days prior to the accident.
His car was seen on camera crossing back into Whatcom County through a berry field on September 17th.
Border Patrol was alerted to the illegal crossing and had set out to find Niculae when they were informed by Sumas Police that his car crashed into another vehicle and flipped over.
Three of the six passengers of Niculae’s car suffered serious injuries, but he was not hurt.
None of the passengers or Niculae are legally allowed to be in the U.S.
Niculae, who had been residing in southern California, was taken into federal custody following the crash.
He faces 13 total federal charges.
