The Seahawks are flying high after a thrilling win to open the NFL season.

Seattle edged New England 13-10 last night to prevail once again in a rematch of last season’s Super Bowl.

But the win was marred by an early injury to starting quarterback Sam Darnold, who left with a hip injury he suffered on the fifth snap of the game. Although coach Mike Macdonald says the team received positive news surrounding the injury, ESPN reports that Darnold is expected to miss next week’s game against Arizona.

His backup, Drew Lock, held things down last night, completing 16 of 22 pass attempts for 187 yards and a touchdown with no turnovers.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba highlighted the offense with a 45-yard touchdown to tie the game in the 4th quarter before Jason Myers nailed the game-winning field goal. The reigning Offensive Player of the Year finished with 8 catches for 122 yards.

The Seahawks defense also came through in the clutch by picking off Patriots quarterback Drake Maye three times in the fourth quarter, including the game-clincher from Josh Jobe.

Seattle has an extended break before traveling to face the Arizona Cardinals next Sunday.

 

Meanwhile, the Seahawks’ division rivals are going head-to-head down under tonight.

The LA Rams and San Francisco 49ers are facing off for the NFL’s first-ever game in Melbourne, Australia. Coverage begins at 5:00 and kickoff is at 5:35 on KPUG.

The Mariners picked up a win to end their homestand this afternoon.

The M’s edged the Texas Rangers 4-3 to take the rubber match at T-Mobile Park.

Texas scored the first three runs of the game, but Seattle scored all four of their runs in a crucial seventh inning. Dom Canzone had an RBI single before Julio Rodriguez hit a 3-run homer to lead the win.

Logan Gilbert gave up three runs and struck out 11 through seven innings to earn his 12th win of the season.

The Mariners now sit six games behind the Astros for first place in the AL West heading into their final road trip of the season. It starts tomorrow as George Kirby takes the mound for the first of three against the Athletics.

Week 2 of the high school football season kicks off tonight.

Squalicum is hosting Anacortes in a rematch of last year’s major upset where the Storm shocked the 2x defending state champion Seahawks.

It’s the lone Thursday night matchup here in Whatcom County.

Even though they’re on break, the Storm suffered a major loss at the FIBA Women’s World Cup.

The team announced today that 4x All-WNBA defender Ezi Magbegor will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL she suffered in last night’s game with Australia. She’s also likely to miss time during the next season as well.

Meanwhile, Team USA thumped Hungary 108-56 earlier today to advance to the World Cup semifinals.

They’ll play the winner of Spain vs. Australia on Saturday.

WWU Vikings News

Western’s men’s soccer team just suffered their first loss of the season.

The 14th nationally ranked Vikings fell to Westminster 3-1 this afternoon in Denver.

The Viks began the season 4-0 for their best start in program history, including two wins against top five nationally-ranked teams.

They’ll look to rebound on Sunday as they continue their six-game road trip against Regis University.

NHL News

The hockey world is mourning the loss of a beloved former player, coach and analyst.

ESPN reports that Barry Melrose passed away yesterday at the age of 70.

Melrose played 11 years in the NHL before coaching the Wayne Gretzky-led Los Angeles Kings in the early-90’s, bringing them to the Stanley Cup Final in the first of his three seasons. He also served as coach of the Seattle Thunderbirds in 1988 and 1989.

Melrose was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2023, leading to his retirement from ESPN.
