BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A proposed House Bill, backed by the Washington State Attorney General, could save you some headaches the next time you are thinking about buying a used car.

Attorney General Bob Ferguson and Tukwila-area State Representative David Hackney are working together on the legislation.

If passed, HB 1184 would require used car dealers to either cover most of the costs needed to repair a recently purchased vehicle or offer a full refund.

Coverage would be determined based on the car’s mileage at purchase.

Ferguson said that between January 2021 and July 2022, over 550 complaints were reported against used car dealers.

Many of the vehicles purchased in the complaints broke down or malfunctioned shortly after they were purchased.
