BELLINGHAM, WA. – (KGMI.com) A serious crash on I-5 sent a Bellingham man to the hospital and shut down a portion of the freeway on Wednesday, December 6th.

The Washington State Patrol says a motorcyclist attempted to ride between lanes on I-5 southbound near Sunset Drive just before 1 p.m.

He hit two cars in the process, the force of which sent him off his bike and over the jersey barrier into the northbound lanes.

A third car heading north struck him.

All lanes of I-5 north and south were closed for hours, causing massive delays on other parts of I-5 and roads throughout Whatcom County.

The motorcyclist, identified as 33-year-old Michael Hammond, was taken to PeaceHealth St Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham with serious injuries.

None of the other drivers or passengers involved were hurt.
