BELLINGHAM, Wash. – All Whatcom County beaches are now closed to recreational shellfish harvesting.

Elevated levels of Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning biotoxin have prompted the Washington State Department of Health to prohibit harvesting on beaches north of Sandy Point, including Point Roberts.

Beaches south of Sandy Point were already closed to harvesting.

Biotoxin levels change rapidly and people are urged to check the DOH website for current conditions before collecting shellfish.

Commercially produced shellfish available in stores is tested regularly and is safe to eat.
